Why is Palm oil used in chocolate?
Palm oil-based butter mimics the taste of cocoa butter but is much cheaper. Palm oil is a cheaper alternative to cocoa butter. Therefore it can be used by chocolate manufacturers as a production cost saving measure.
Why is palm oil bad?
The Palm oil industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rain forest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production. Chocolate made with palm oil is inferior in flavour and texture.
For these reasons we encourage consumers to refrain from products that contain vegetable oil (palm oil).
